Creation and nature are akin to improvisation, and improvisation leads to the wellspring of the unknown.  I approach the canvas with a loose concept in mind if at all.  The idea is to work freely and then through revision and subtraction images are created.  One can present an image with a suggestion of another image barely hinted at. This leaves a doubt in the mind, a questioning through seeing. These ambiguous images give way to the viewer's personal discovery of the piece. One aim may be to have the painting relate on both an objective plane and a subjective plane of seeing, or the conscious vs. the subconscious. 

Controlled color palettes, line, shape, and surface are what interest me. I often return to the figurative but without feeling and ambiguity a work holds no power.  I want to be surprised by the work and even confounded.  Nature and great art are always an inspiration.
